Remote Control Helicopters VS Other Aircraft

There are a number of purposes for model aircrafts to be made. The number one requirement of it will be for its uses in recreation. There several types of these aircrafts that are manufactured to cater to almost every need of hobbyists. The level of fun is constantly changed because newer unique models with advanced options come in to the market daily. Although many enthusiasts may find that most models of aircraft give out the same feeling, there are also some that rise above the others. The best example for these is remote control helicopters.Like most other types of toy aircraft, users of remote control helicopters also need good practice if they are to fly them. These Machines may sometimes be harder to navigate compared to most other types of aircraft in the market. But there are many advantages of this toy that other types of aircraft will not offer.Unlike planes that are controlled remotely that needs a lot of space to fly around and a flat surface area to play the role of the runway, these remote control helicopters can be flown without any problem from any small space at any given time. Whether it is a grass land or indoors, the top of your car or a box, these toys can takeoff from anywhere as long as it has something solid to stand on. The vertical takeoff is the key to its ability. The different designs which these durable toys come in make it much more adaptable to its surroundings. They come in forms such as mini remote control helicopters that are able to be flown inside your office room or house which is impossible to do with any other aircraft. Later models of this toy with much more advanced technology have been designed to go at speeds and distances that were never thought possible. They come in very bright eye catching colors and models to enhance the fun of flying through its appearance.Comparing the prices, you will see that RC toys cost much less than model air planes and other aircraft in today's toy market. Many people do not have the ability to enjoy flying because most aircraft are too expensive to buy. But these are very affordable because they come in different prices thus enables the enthusiast to pick one on his or her own choice depending on amount they can afford on it.There has been an up rise in the number of children as well as adults who enjoy flying these remarkable machines. Also newer models come into the market with more advanced remote technology frequently making the price of these toys come down daily. It will not be same price you checked a week ago. Once a newer model is released, prices of the previous models are dropped automatically making remote control helicopters several times more available to a person who did not have the ability to buy one a few months ago resulting to the enjoyment factor going up.

Personal Helicopters

Personal Helicopters

Helicopter design pioneers like Arthur Young and Stanley Hiller envisioned long ago that helicopters would be used as commonly as automobiles for personal transportation in the future. However, small and simple private aircraft gained more importance then helicopters, as they were not only cost-effective but also required low expenses for its maintenance. A propeller-driven small plane is much more popular than a small helicopter with complicated control mechanisms. Helicopters not only have high maintenance costs, but higher insurance costs as well.

Stanley Hiller, the biggest advocate of personal helicopters, built a prototype private helicopter using coaxial rotors, and also developed more conventional helicopters to reduce the cost of choppers for private citizens. Another aviation pioneer, Frank Robinson, engineered the most popular personal helicopter, the Robinson R22. The R22 has a simple design with a pod-like cabin and a boom tail mounting a conventional anti-torque propeller, and runs on a 124-horsepower Lycoming O-320 engine that drives the two bladed rotors. Although the R22 has a higher-than-average accident rate, it was still cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration as being safe. It is generally used for light utility work such as cattle herding, traffic monitoring, agricultural spraying and police observation. However, the R44, the upgraded version of the R22, has a larger engine and is much more reliable than the base model.

Just like private aircraft, some helicopters can also be built from kits, wherein a person can buy the kits and then assemble the parts himself, which reduces the cost of the helicopters considerably. The most popular amateur-built helicopter in the US sold to date is the Bensen B-8 Gyrocopter. Some of the other trendy helicopters commonly built from a kit are American Sportscopter's first ultralight helicopter Ultrasport 254, The RotorWay Scorpion133 and the Dragon Fly 333.

Although there are many small helicopters built by various manufacturers in the US, helicopters have not been able to compete with the cheaper light fixed-wing aircraft which are not only easier to fly but cheaper to maintain.

Ultra Light and Micro Light Aircraft - Helicopters

Ultra Light and Micro Light Aircraft - Helicopters

Helicopters in the ultra light or micro light aircraft class are very seldom seen compared to all other models.

Factories in the United Kingdom and United States manufacture kits that can be bought and assembled at home. Some of them also have affiliate factories in other parts of the world for supply, after sales service or financial reasons.

The instability of helicopters makes them extremely difficult to fly. The training program for a helicopter is much more intense than for a winged aircraft. Some instructors prefer a student to qualify as a winged plane pilot before enrolling as a helicopter pilot student.

There are many rules and regulations that go with the assembly of the kit as well. Some technical inspections at certain stages during assembly and after completion have to be conducted. Without such technically qualified persons in ones area to do the inspections the helicopter can possibly never be completed and tested, training to fly it is the next step. With the sparse distribution of helicopter expertise, chances are that, in a fairly remote location, a pilot with the proper instruction rating for the newly built helicopter may be very hard to find or not at all.

With all the hardships overcome, surely the proud owner of an ultra light helicopter will have many hours of great entertainment flying his new aircraft, being able to land almost anywhere and not being dependent on aerodromes.

The obvious disadvantages that go with ultra light helicopter ownership are the technical complexities, training requirements as well as the considerable higher cost related to the combination of all factors.

The personal abilities of the owner / pilot will also be of prime importance in the success and safety in the operations with his aircraft.
