The career options that stem from completing a degree in aviation technology are broad. Students can learn to be a part of the aviation field by searching out a program provided by a vocational college. Training is essential for this field and students will find a wealth of opportunities.

The proper skills to successfully enter a career are gained by completing one of the options available. Vocational colleges offer students many different types of certificates and associate's degree programs. The work completed allows students to understand the maintenance and engineering behind airplanes, helicopters, and other flying machines.

Students that pursue a certificate program will find that many schools prepare them to become maintenance technicians. Aviation Technology Schools award Associate of Applied Science and Bachelor of Science degrees and certificates. The Aviation Technology Associate of Applied Science (AAS) - Airway Science Degree program includes the required FAA license courses and courses in English, communications, and electives required by standard university AAS degrees.

Professional Piloting programs in Aviation Technology Schools prepare students for positions in the aviation industry as airplane pilots. Theory and flight training is provided through curriculums approved by the FAA.

Aviation Technology certificate programs include only the Federal Aviation Administration approved courses required for the Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic's License. This program requires laboratory classes working on aircraft and aircraft components.

Bachelor of Science degrees in Aviation Technology require additional studies to include the general education requirements for baccalaureate degrees, along with specific aviation courses for the particular degree discipline.

Aviation technology training teaches students to keep aircraft in peak operating condition. Vocational courses are taught in aviation mechanics, aviation service and repair, and complete aviation inspection, as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). FAA certified curriculums train in the concepts of weight and balance, physics, aircraft systems, control tower operations, and ground operations.

Students in mechanical aviation programs will study preventive maintenance, engine inspection, landing gears, instrumentation, cabin pressurization, and all accessories, comprised of brakes, valves, pumps, air-filtration, and air-conditioning systems. Students will also perform aviation maintenance and parts replacement, aircraft testing, and inspection for corrosion and wear.

Aviation mechanics who have completed an aviation course may be prepared to earn Airframe Mechanic Certificates by passing FAA examinations. Aviation mechanics may also receive Inspector Certificates to perform inspections of repair and maintenance completed by aviation mechanics crews. Non-certified aviation mechanics work under the supervision of certified mechanics.

Aviation technology schools help students to earn certificates and degrees by presenting programs of study that are approved by the FAA. Students can expect these rigorous courses to include mathematics, physics, chemistry, electronics, computer science, and mechanical drawing for demonstrating an understanding of the principles of aircraft operation. Aviation technology training programs also emphasize the technical aspects of turbine engines, aviation electronics, and composite materials used in the construction of aircraft.

Opportunities to gain aviation training (flight training) are available in some variations of aviation technology training. Advanced studies in aeronautics, electronics technology avionics, and in Airframe and Power plant (A&P) courses are also possible in some schools.
