It is amazing how much energy it takes to get a large float plane or seaplane off the deck and into the air. First of all, we have to understand that water is 750 times denser than air, and that's a lot to overcome. Then getting the aircraft at of the water and up on the surface also takes a lot of power, and it takes a lot of power to get the aircraft up on the step, and to break free from the surface of the water. All that energy required means that float planes and seaplanes need a tremendous amount of power.

Because of these great big large engines and they need to create so much lift to break free from that heavy water, they also require more fuel, and wings with a large camber, the type of design that is not really made for high-speed. Therein lies the problem. Now then, I suppose in the future with new materials some of these problems can be fixed. The aircraft will be lighter, the wing will be able to shape shift, and it won't take so much power to get the aircraft into the air.

Still, there's another component and a component that has to do with aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, and all of the corresponding dynamics during that transition period. That's what I'd like to talk to you about today. I would like to talk to you about conceptual designs for seaplanes and float planes during that transition from water to air. Perhaps, we need to redesign these aircraft with not only one step on the bottom of the float, but perhaps multi-steps. Or better yet floats which shape shift as the aircraft accelerates on the water, always remaining the optimum needed to break free from the water and get into the ground effect - flight.

Many float planes have wing floats, which become airborne well prior to the main floats, or the fuselage which is also designed as a float on the bottom. As the Wing starts to create lift, and the buoyancy shifts on the fuselage float and it is pulled out of the water. You could consider that one step, and then the fuselage itself has a step as the aircraft accelerates it comes up on that step, as it gets closer to flying speed.

Now then, what if we could shape shift the Wing floats and what if we could change the camber of the wing once it became airborne and was accelerating through the ground cushion? If we could do that, we could lower the amount of fuel required for take-off, and the amount of energy the aircraft had to produce to get airborne.

We would also be able to have the aircraft take-off quicker in a shorter distance. All of this would make the aircraft more efficient, and provide for less wear and tear when taking-off in choppy water, and we could solve a huge number of problems we have today with the inefficiencies in flow planes and seaplanes. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

How can such launching speeds are attained with the referenced system. Something along the lines of a steam piston pumped up in pressure until a specially designed part breaks and the aircraft is flung into the air. There are two aspects left out that seem pertinent to me (as both an engineer and retired Navy engineer):

1. the launching valve is a very fast opening-closing valve.

2. Prior to the launching valve, steam is "stored" in a steam accumulator, essentially a large insulated tank.

The combination of the accumulator and launching valve is what delivers a large amount of high temperature and high pressure steam to the pistons in a very short time. There is definitely a quick acting launch valve, length of time the valve is open is calculated based on take off velocity and weight of the aircraft. The "holdback device" is the part that breaks. The aircraft carrier carries a literal truckload of the holdback devices for the duration of the voyage, since it's a one-time use device.

For ground-based operations, the aircraft can be held against the brakes until the engine is developing full thrust. To do that on a carrier, you'd need to find some way of coordinating brake release with steam valve opening - and it's probably easier just to have a weak link in the system instead.

I don't believe water is used as a hydrauli fluid in the arresting gear machinery. It is a Water-Brake, but this is part of the catapult, not the arresting gear. On the catapult, the pistons that are pushed forward by the steam need to decellerate from ~160 mph to zero in a matter of feet. This is accomplished by using a "water brake", and the water does get very hot, and must be refilled periodically.

Don't take fresh water too casually. A lot of land based arresting gear is water-filled - I'd be surprised if the shipborne stuff was significantly different. According to the LSO manual, the launching valves have adjustable orifices control the pressure of the steam into the pistons. The holdback device is also called a tension bar and when that breaks, the built-up steam then expands to push the piston and aircraft forward. Note that the manual discusses the importance of pre-heating the entire assembly to ensure that the steam's energy is not wasted in heating up mechanical components. The carrier manual NAEC-MISC-06900 is also a good authority, but it only mentions "fluid" in the context of the arresting gear. Ditto the LSO manual; "engine fluid" but never "water."

Very little of the steam escapes the catapult- the vast majority of it is reclaimed and reheated. It's far easier to turn 211 degree water into steam than to boil seawater from scratch!

The structure supporting the catapult is incredible, as is the water brake- ships are designed as a giant cantilever beam with most of the displacement in the center, and the bow and stern as cantelievers. And I tell you what- the entire bow of the ship shakes when the catapult slams into the water brake! All that massive steel and it still moves under the stresses, it's incredible.

Pre-heating has other purposes as well. Like most metallic systems, catapults expand when heated. They will expand significantly (I don't recall the numbers) from ambient to operating. If one were to try to operate the catapult without the system being heated and expanded, I suspect there will be significant mechanical problems, including even the possibility of the ram hanging up. "Very little steam" escapes, this is relative. I believe as the equivalent of over a hundred gallons of water is lost on each cat shot, assuming steam leaks are minimal.

From my experience, its not just the bow of the ship sthat "shakes" on launch, you can feel it everywhere on the ship! You can't really feel the bow cats outside of the bow, or the waist cats much outside of the sponson. I mean, there's a little bit of noise but not really any noticeable vibration and there's so much noise from elsewhere it's drowned out. If you're down 2nd deck and below aft of about frame 100 or so, you'd never even know they were launching or recovering aircraft.

I think they use a lot of steam, but I can guarantee they're not losing a hundred gallons of water during launch, there just isn't that much steam coming through the slit, a couple of gallons, maybe ten gallons at the most. If you were losing that much steam over the length of the catapult, it would lose pressure and stop accelerating towards the end; instead we just see a tiny bit of seepage. Perhaps, it's a difference in carriers.

Can a Canard Biplane Aircraft with a backward swept bottom wing and a forward swept top wing with an above fuselage engine that is aft make a promising prototype? The Online Think Tank believes so and has submitted the first artists concept rough sketches. Here is what one thinker had to say about the design:

Joseph asks: "Looking at the sketch book picture of a New Aircraft Design, I thought what if the wind power... was incorporated into the design..."

The reply to Joseph's question was interesting; Greetings Joseph, hope you are well. Indeed, my thinking on that design; and realize that the sketch needs a little bit of work, i.e. better angle perspectives on the wings to provide continuous flow from bottom to top. Now, since nearly all the airflow generated is wrapped around back into the intake, you could run the aircraft on wind. My design considers trying to build an aircraft that has an extremely short wingspan, maximizing the airflow.

Thus a smaller version could be a flying car, with a wing span within the lanes of a road. Drive down the road and once you had adequate airflow it would lift off the ground at very slow speeds. For instance a UAV on an aircraft carrier, short wings, easy to stack, not much space needed to store, to land or take off due to STOL capabilities. The range would be far due to the maximized efficiency. If a blown-up version was made it makes a nice dirigible (5-year airborne craft) with solar because it could be wrapped (like a bus wrap) with solar cells, on graphene coating, giving it structural integrity too. With a dirigible, it could fill with ram air and increase speed by dumping air. Fast speed, slow speed, low drag, high drag, with morphing. It makes a nice design for recon, flying car, private plane NASA SATS style, etc.

So, yes, the motor could be wind powered, tickle charging could come from the friction on the surfaces (static electricity) + solar and plug in at a home, aircraft carrier. The design seems plausible for this wind aircraft concept. Especially considering the Gravity Aircraft design by the kid at GA Tech and adding in a dirigible component, buoyancy techniques. On the rise the Cold war Soviet's needed an upgrade, for their MiG-21 which range was not efficient. The ground-attack version MiG-27 was picked out to serve Russia's air force. It first flew in 1972 as a single seat version. One major characteristic that MiG-27 got from its predecessor MiG-21 was the "swing wing". It uses a state of art terrain-avoidance radar and can engage in any weather. The MiG-27 lacks the air-to-air radar relying instead on other fighter aircraft to defend it. Although MiG-27 is an older type of an aircraft it is still used by many nations around the globe. It had a major role in Afghanistan from 1979-1989, Iran-Iraq War and during the Gulf War in 1991.

There is a paradox, business aviation is 30% down, but completion centres have never been so busy. Of course, heads-of-state, royal families, and even some high rollers remain unaffected by the recession, but this is not the whole story.

Swiss-based Jet Aviation has expanded in the USA. Lufthansa Technik and Marshall Aerospace with their business aviation centre are promoting corporate aircraft maintenance too.

Airlines who are suffering are deferring deliveries, so airframes are becoming available for VIP clients ahead of schedule and at a discount. Completion centres are therefore being pressured to accept them early. Meanwhile, many previous generation business jets are now due for refurbishment, and while airlines are looking to dump their regional jets, entrepreneurial opportunities exist to refurbish them to executive configurations, then offer them to customers for less than a new purchase. Part of the consolidation is also defensive. As the market contracts, OEMs are bringing more completion work in-house. Airlines slash capacity and offload and then refurbishment, interior upgrades, airborne Internet, adjustable LED lighting, and executive suites make a regional jet marketable as a corporate jet.

Lufthansa Technik (LHT) announced late last year that its completion and refurbishment centre at Tulsa, typically working on Falcons and Learjets, will deliver BBJs and its first A319. LHT is also repositioning narrow-body and RJ conversion support work to the former Swissair maintenance complex in Basel.

Similarly, Jet Aviation has been adding major hangar expansions on both continents. Fokker Services has moved into ACJ series completions and has a two-year business jet backlog. Comlux Completions USA is a new player, having bought into Airbus's ACJ Completions Centre in Toulouse, while its Zurich based Creatives division designs, specs and manages completions projects.

In the UK, Cambridge City Airport will now be known as Marshall Airport Cambridge with a new Marshall Business Aviation Centre with integrated corporate maintenance facility.

The Piaggio Avanti is an executive aircraft built by the Italian firm Piaggio Aero. The Avanti has a visual flair reminiscent of ground bound vehicles make by Italian companies such as Ferrari, Ducati, Lamborghini, and Aprilla. The gentle aerodynamic curve of the fuselage gives the aircraft increased aerodynamic efficiencies that results in decreased drag and efficient high speed, high altitude flight performance. Piaggio engineers were able to reduce the total wing area by integrating it with the fuselage which provides up to 20% of the total lift.

The aircraft uses a pusher configuration (engines mounted with props pointed to the rear) and a forward canard. The plane offers operators the speed of light jets, the comfort of a mid size cabin, and operating efficiencies that are 40% higher than jet aircraft and 25% higher than competing twin engine business turpo-props.

The aircraft has a maximum speed of Mach .7 and a certified service ceiling of 41,000 ft. which allows it to fly above most weather systems. It's certified for single pilot operations and is able to seat up to nine passengers in a stand up cabin.

The Avanti II is constructed 90% from aluminum and 10% from composites. It's powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6-A turboprop engines encased in Morreggio all composite nacelles. The engines are mounted above the wing, rated at 850 shp each, and power Hartzell five bladed, constant speed, full feathering, reversible pitch, rear mounted propellers. Fuel is held in two fuselage tanks and two wing tanks. The maximum range of the aircraft with one pilot, six passengers, and IFR reserves is 1800 nm.

The airplane uses an avionic system based on the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 which features three 8x10 inch LCD displays, an FMS 3000 flight management system, and AHS 3000 attitude reference system. The pilot and copilot have fully adjustable reclining seats.

For cabin occupants the Avanti II is a very comfortable airplane. The pusher configuration pushes sound towards the tail of the aircraft while innovative fuselage, wing, and engine design reduces vibration and maximizes passenger comfort.

The aircraft offers something for everyone. For pilots its performance puts it on par with many of the entry level corporate jets and its landing distance over a 50ft.obstacle of 2860 ft. and its takeoff distance over a 50 ft. obstacle of 2850 ft. give it the ability to operate out of a greater variety of smaller airfields. For passengers, it offers all the comforts that executives expect out of their aircraft including a stand up cabin and quiet noise levels.
